A Call to Restore Discipline

Growing up in Ghana, we had Town Councils with dedicated and highly effective health inspectors who carried out their duties diligently. We also had council courts that operated swiftly, almost like today’s fast-track courts. Offenders who violated local regulations were either prosecuted or made to pay fines and penalties. Those sanctions served as a strong deterrent and helped keep our communities orderly and disciplined.

Today, many Ghanaians feel that the transition from Town Councils to Municipal Assemblies has not produced the level of discipline and enforcement our communities once enjoyed. The visible decline in law enforcement and accountability has contributed to the disorder we see on our streets.

I also remember the important role played by the Town and Country Planning Department. Before any structure could be built, thorough inspections and approvals were required to ensure proper planning and compliance with regulations. This system helped prevent haphazard development and protected public spaces.

To all Ghanaians and foreigners living in our country, we must recognise that if we fail to confront indiscipline, lawlessness, greed, and impunity, we will all bear the consequences. Progress cannot thrive where laws are ignored and public order is neglected.

To our agencies and public authorities, this is a call to action: wake up and fulfil the responsibilities for which you have been entrusted and paid. Leadership is demonstrated through service, accountability, and the courage to enforce the law fairly and consistently.

Finally, let us all remember that wherever God places us, He expects us to be faithful stewards of the responsibilities entrusted to us.
