Illegal Parking in Municipalities: A Growing Crisis – Part 2

Lawlessness Cannot Become the Norm

The situation is no different on the Spintex Road. Long vehicles are frequently parked on pavements meant for pedestrians, forcing people to walk on the main carriageway and exposing them to the danger of being knocked down by moving vehicles.

Sadly, this culture of indiscipline has become normal. Even where people have enough space in their homes, churches, or business premises, many still choose to park in unauthorized places because they know there is little or no enforcement. Without compliance, strict monitoring, and punitive measures against offenders, illegal parking continues unchecked. Unfortunately, some offenders appear to enjoy protection from those who should be enforcing the law.

This growing disregard for the law has contributed to increasing indiscipline across our communities. From the city of Accra to surrounding towns, municipal assemblies have allowed traders, hawkers, kiosks, and containers to occupy public spaces with little control. Pedestrian walkways have been taken over, forcing people onto busy roads. Some shop owners have even extended their businesses onto streets, pavements, and over drains and gutters, obstructing movement and creating unsafe conditions.

The question remains: Are the authorities not seeing these violations, or have they simply chosen to ignore them? Until our laws are enforced fairly and consistently, disorder will continue to replace discipline, and our communities will become increasingly unsafe for everyone.
